In 1948, the designation P-51 (P for pursuit) was changed to F-51 (F for fighter) due to a new designation scheme throughout the USAF. This design is inspired by the F-51D Mustang "FF-943" (Serial 44-12943) "Was that too fast?" of the shark-mouthed 12th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 18th Fighter Bomber Group, during the Korean War, based at Chinhae Air Base (Jinhae Air Base), South Korea, 1951. The 12th FBS flew the F-51 from 9 December 1950 to 2 June 1952.
