This design is based on Lancaster “AJ-G” (serial number ED932 ) flown by Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar when he led (also known as the “Dambusters Raid”) at the age of 24. Operation Chastise was an attack on German dams carried out on the night of 16/17 May 1943 by 617 Squadron RAF Bomber Command, using special "bouncing bombs". The Möhne and Edersee dams were breached, however, 53 of the 133 aircrew who took part were killed, 3 captured, with 8 of the 19 Lancasters that took part were destroyed. Of the survivors, 34 were decorated at Buckingham Palace on 22 June, with Gibson awarded the Victoria Cross.
