VMFA-531, known as the “Grey Ghosts,” was a distinguished U.S. Marine Corps fighter squadron established on November 16, 1942, as VMF(N)-531, the first Marine night-fighter squadron. Throughout its service, the squadron flew various aircraft, including the Lockheed PV-1 Ventura, Grumman F7F Tigercat, Douglas F3D Skyknight, McDonnell F-4 Phantom II, and the F/A-18 Hornet. VMFA-531 participated in significant conflicts such as World War II and the Vietnam War, providing night-time air defense and attack capabilities. The squadron was decommissioned in March, 1992, after nearly five decades of service.
